A message from Earth
My son, Andrew is writing a series of letters from himself to Aliens, he writes in a tongue in cheek manner in what promises to be an entertaining set of observation about humans, what we are, how we interact and such like.
Which got me thinking what would Alien observers looking down on us think?
Would they marvel at our art – literature? Probably not, would they be able to understand the difference between a Picasso and 2nd rate graffiti or Shakespeare and Mills and Boon.
Would they marvel at our engineering, cars, jets and bullet trains? Probably not, they have just travelled from the other side of the Galaxy. I suspect they would hardly be impressed by the new Prius, or Hadron Collider.
Would they find us attractive and entertaining company? Do most of us find apes and monkeys attractive and entertaining for more than a few moments, and what would be their definition of attractive anyway?
Would they understand our obsessive preoccupation with people we pretend are celebrities? … Do they have a concept of being famous for being put in a house with others and filmed for weeks on end doing household chores?
I can imagine that they would have a concept of how somebody can totally pollute and desecrate a planet. It’s the strive for better and more that unthinkingly does the damage. No one goes out to deliberately foul their living space, They have probably had the same problems themselves.
I only hope they look down on us and don’t think we are totally stupid … Thinking how we treat the children of our planet, our future is beyond belief.
I tend to think that the solution to all the world’s problems. The cure for the common cold, cold fusion and unlimited energy, faster than light travel is locked in the head of some genius child who had the misfortune to be born in Sub-Saharan Africa or aboriginal Australia and who will never fulfill their full potential due to our general lack of care.
Re-thinking it – I think the aliens will look down and shake their head(s) and feel total pity for us. If and when they do get around to visiting us, I think they will turn around and think we are not worth the effort, if they have not done it before.
Oh! The big boys toy, The Cern Hadron Collider cost £2.6bn and a well for clean water in India costs £700 …………… I suspect the aliens would think our priorities slightly mad, that most people haven’t got clean safe water..
Anyway on a less serious note the start of the Earth Calling Letters can be found at Who is Andrew Beattie
